Accessibility
RNICG recognises the importance of providing a website that is accessible to all our user groups, including those with disabilities. Our accessibility standards are in place with the intention of making the content accessible to the widest range of visitors, regardless of disability or impairment. This has been achieved by adhering to best practice W3C standards.
Standards compliance
This website is built using code compliant with World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards for XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets. W3C is the governing authority on web development standards and practices.
The pages on the RNICG website have been built to comply with the minimum standard of the World Wide Web (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) level 1 (A) and, wherever possible, level 2 (AA) recommendations.
All our pages validate as HTML 4.01 Transitional. All pages use structured semantic markup. H1 tags are used for main titles, and H2, H3 and H4 tags for subtitles.
Navigation shortcuts
There are three hidden links at the start of every page that allow you to jump directly to the main content of the page as well as the main navigation and footer navigation.
Browser settings
Changing the settings in your browser may help to make this site easier to use. It is possible to change text size and colour, as well as background colours, by altering the preferences or options in your browser. The precise details of how to do this will be different for each type of browser, so you should consult your browser's help section.
You can change the presentation of this website by turning off the style sheet in the browser preferences or by substituting your own style sheet.
Access keys
The ability to navigate the site using other means than a mouse can be important for those who have difficulties in using a mouse or other pointing device. To help with this we have set up 'Access Keys' on the site which allows easy navigation to the main pages on the website.
As well as helping those who have difficulty using a Mouse it also allows quick access to the main pages for anyone who prefers to use the keyboard.
On Windows, you can press the ‘alt' key and the access key, followed by the 'enter' key. On Macintosh, you can press the ‘ctrl' key and the access key.
Please note: Access keys are only supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and above and Netscape 6.x versions. Access keys work in all versions of Mozilla Firefox.
On our own website, we have assigned the following accessibility keys:
Key 0: Access keys details
Key 1: Home
Key 2: Who we are
Key 3: What we do
Key 5: Contact us
Key 6: Accessibility
Key 7: Privacy
Key 8: Legal
Consistent navigation
Once you enter the site through the entry page the navigation is consistent throughout the site. Most pages are available from every single page on the website.
Images and alt tags
We have avoided using excessive graphics within the website where possible to ensure quick download times and access to information which cannot be read if in image format.
Where images have been used we have added 'Alt' tags - text alternatives so that you will still know what the image is meant to convey even if it does not load, or if you've have chosen to browse with the images switched off, or you are using an assistive technology like a screen reader to browse the webpage rather than view.
Resizable text
We have been careful to make sure that we have not fixed the size of the textual information on the website so that visitors who wish to can alter the font size on the screen to make it easier to read.
